Arthritis and bone on bone joints Topic

Hi I’m new here. I just joined a gym. I have bad arthritis and bone on bone in my knee. I already know the treadmill is not going to be used. I’m thinking of using the weight machines and the bike. I’ve really been struggling with exercise because I can’t do any squats and I can’t get on the floor because I have to use my knee to get up and it’s to painful. Forget walking I can walk about 5 minutes and my knee just hurts. Any advice you guys can give me would help a lot. Thanks

Hi U1187496024,

So glad to hear you joined a gym! Now you just need to figure out a plan that manages your arthritis. Is there a fitness trainer at your gym who can give you specific guidance for machines and cardio that won't aggravate your knee? You are correct, some exercises like the treadmill may be too much for your knee. On the other hand, strengthening the area around the knee and losing weight will benefit the knee joint.

Many people (myself included) find that physical therapists are awesome at helping to create a plan unique for your fitness level and joint issues. Can you get a referral from your doctor?

I found these helpful articles from the Arthritis Foundation that discuss arthritis pain and exercise. Hope they are helpful!

I’m new here also. I have osteoarthritis in my knee. I’m going through the same issues with limited mobility and pain. Last week I asked my doctor if I could join a gym and she gave me the ok with what machines to stay away from. For me, I have found the exercise bike makes my knee feel better. Hope this helps!

Hi Catlady1- Thanks for sharing your situation. Glad to hear your doctor was able to provide some advice on what machines to use and which to avoid. Many people find that short bouts of the stationary bike are easier on the knees. Glad you are having success with that! Have a good week, Joanna (MyNetDiary Dietitian)
