BMI - how important is it? Topic


Today I reached my goal of dropping my BMI to being in the “Normal” category. I started my journey at 212 and now am 159. (68 year old man, 5’ 7”). I’m please but I wonder is BMI an important/ valid tool or should I use some other tool or metric to update my goal now that I’ve achieved this one? How much weight loss is enough or too much?

Congrats on your weight loss! Losing 53# is a big deal!
Other important metrics to evaluate health, in addition to BMI are:
1. Waist circumference
2. Blood pressure
3. Lipid pannel
4. HgA1C
Are these in the "healthy range?"

In addition, how is your energy level? How is your cardio/respiratory fitness? How is your balance and mobility? These are all important aspects of health in addition to BMI or body mass index.

-I'd suggest focusing on these other metrics before tackling additional weight loss. Though a visit with your doctor might be helpful as they know your health the best and can discuss the pros and cons of additional weight loss. My philosophy is that health is a lot more than a number on a scale!
