Final stretch Topic

Back in early April, I set a goal of dropping 65 lbs, to my long-term target weight of 225 by Thanksgiving. That seemed like forever away, both in time (which is all sorts of weird this year) and weight (after a years-long climb — busy life, too much going out, quitting smoking, etc.). Now I’m down 57 lbs since then, with a month still left to go.

Before this, I’ve never had good luck losing much weight. And if I did, it was a quick burst of 10 lbs I’d eventually gain back.

While everyone was talking about “the COVID 15” (gaining weight due to hibernation, stress, etc.), I used the newfound flexibility from working from home to make some big food and lifestyle changes. (I wasn’t feeling great and got test results indicating fatty liver coming on, so I had good motivation to make changes too.) After 3 months of no beer and lots of healthy foods, I was down 30 lbs and my levels were normal. Getting my thyroid levels to normal probably helped too.

I haven’t eaten “diet foods,” haven’t eaten anything that wasn’t delicious (learning to love fruits and veggies!), and never flat-out denied myself much (though I had to pull back on some things — notably beer, going out too much — and can’t keep pints of ice cream around). I’ve just made lots of habit and lifestyle changes, where I always get to the healthy foods first, and work in the other things I want where I can fit them.

I’m not sure how things are going to go when life gets back to normal (eventually), but I’m happy with how things are looking right now.
