I’m a beginner so please bare with me. I have been counting calories. Making sure to include protein, veggies and fruit. I drink a lot of water daily. I have only been consistently on track for over a week with no slip ups. I was in a great spot yesterday. I did a lot of cardio and some resistance. I get on the scale and a pound gained? I haven’t incorporated too much weight training into my exercise just yet mostly cardio because I don’t want to exhaust myself and get off track. It’s not a huge difference but I am confused. Anyone have answers? I know I drank over a 100 oz water so could the pound just be water weight? Or maybe some muscle?

Hi there U1190230187- Welcome to MyNetDiary. It sounds like you are off to a great start! There are lots of variables that impact the scale. Fluid retention due to high salt intake, fluid retention due to a strenuous workout, lack of a bowel movement, etc. To minimize the impact of these variables we suggest checking your progress on the scale once a week. From what you shared, it sounds like it is too early to see a drop on the scale. A general guideline is to strive to lose about 1# a week, as opposed to losing large amounts quickly. Keep up with your hard work and I am certain it will pay off. Best, Joanna (MyNetDiary Dietitian)

Unfortunately exercise doesn’t immediately lead to weight loss.
Strength training keeps your metabolism higher for longer than cardio does, so incorporating both regularly is important.
And make sure you weigh yourself the same time of day each time.
Weight does fluctuate throughout the day. Good luck!
