I’ve been told by my doctors and diabetes educator to try the keto diet as my diabetes is out of control (my fault) and I’ve been put on up to 7 insulin shots a day. My normal diet consists of toast in the morning with small amount of butter and Nutella plus a latte with one sugar. My lunch is either muesli and yoghurt or a sandwich and my dinner is usually a pre made meal from the supermarket (either butter chicken or sweet and sour chicken).
I need help with my diet, obviously. But right now can’t afford the premium so am wondering if someone could send me in the direction of a site with free recipes and such.
Thank you.

Hi there JessML27-
Cutting back on carbs can be helpful when it comes to managing diabetes. By eating less carbs you'll need less insulin (both meal time and basal). And yet the KETO diet provides minimal carbohydrates. It can be dangerous if you are following this eating plan and taking the same amount of insulin. You are at risk of low blood sugars, which are very dangerous. Thus we suggest you work closely with your doctor + your diabetes educator, before and during this eating plan.

This article provides additional tips to safely following KETO:
https://www.mynetdiary.com/get_started_on_keto_diet_the_right_way_5_steps_for_success.html

Taken directly from the above article: "If you have diabetes, You may choose a keto diet to lower your blood sugar. If you take diabetes medicine, talk to your doctor before you begin this plan. Low blood sugars (hypoglycemia) can be dangerous.

Your doctor may recommend that you decrease your diabetes medicine to avoid low blood sugar. You may need to monitor your blood sugar more often, and have your medicine changed if your blood sugar goes too low after you get started on a keto diet."

Finally, I really like Allrecipes.com and eatingwell.com for recipe inspiration. Please keep us updated on your progress~ Best, Joanna (MyNetDiary Dietitian)

Hi there U1193629645-
Healthy eating and regular physical activity are important for preventing diseases and feeling your best!
I'd suggest eating 3 balanced meals each day as well as snacks.

These articles provide healthy meal and snack ideas:

https://www.mynetdiary.com/superfoods-for-your-immune-system-try-these-20-immune-boosting-snacks-at-less-than-150-calories-each.html
Also, make sure you get in some physicl activity, at least 5 days a week.

-At age 16 your nutrient needs are elevated to support growth and health. I would not suggest losing weight at this time. Instead, I would encourage you to meet with a dietitian who is familiar with Mexican cusine and culture, to come up with an individual plan to promote health. You can search for a dietitian here: https://www.eatright.org/find-a-nutrition-expert
