Macros - carbs, protein & paleo diet Topic

Hi! Trying again because I accidentally made a “blog” entry before, new here! Lol

Anyway, I was an overweight child - I weighed more at 12 than I do now. In college (2014-2017) I followed a strict paleo lifestyle and exercised frequently, and achieved my lowest weight of 114. I let myself slip post graduation, gaining 35 pounds since.

I’m getting back into it slowly, but I realized the paleo lifestyle doesn’t really work with my recommended macros - I’m under on carbs and over on protein, and I’m not even full paleo yet!

I’m wondering if this could have any ill effects? It worked very well for me previously, but I was younger and I know metabolism (etc.) changes with age. Was I just in a prime “weight loss stage” back then? Or could this lifestyle help me achieve my goals again? I don’t want to be counterproductive. Also, can too “few” carbs or too “much” protein contribute to any health issues? Insight is appreciated! Thank you.

Hello Jenibelle,
I am glad you reached out and happy to hear you are getting back on track with better health! Way to go! For weight loss and adequate energy, you may want to consider a low-carb diet that limits carbs and is higher in protein but doesn't drastically limit carbs. Perhaps a plan that limits carbs to 30-35% of daily calories would be a good place to start. With Premium membership, the low-carb diet plan option is set at 30% calories from fat but it can be adjusted. Also, are you exercising to help with weight loss and body fitness?

Hi Brenda, thanks for the speedy reply! How can I adjust to the “low carb” plan? I believe I have premium membership, but still learning how to navigate the app. Thanks for the help.

In IOS, tap "Coach" at bottom of screen. At top it should say "My Diet. Review or change diet". Tap there and it will scroll down to the different diet options. Tap "Low-carb Diet" and follow instructions to get set up.

I think the issue many people trying paleo get is they are in between keto and carb based. If you are already successfully eating low carb, there is no reason to not try and kick up the fat and get in ketosis. If it feels good to you then it will be easy to stay on and the weight will come off. It’s basically guaranteed that you will gain weight if you try and up your carbs to an imaginary “moderate” amount. There is no moderate amount of carbs as far as your bodies insulin response and lipogensis(fat creation) is concerned. I implore you to do some of your own research on the ketogenic way of eating!
