What is your take on supplements? I take fish oil, multivitamin with iron, calcium, vitamin D, vitamin B12, and Magnesium per MD recommendation after having gastric bypass over four years ago. After doing some research on exercise and appetite suppression I’ve added some more supplements to my daily routine including chromium picolinate, selenium, cinnamon, zinc picolinate, BCAA, and krill oil. I’m training for my first marathon in October, I play competitive roller derby, and for muscle growth I do CrossFit 3x a week. In your opinion could over supplementation lead to harm or am I just providing nutrient rich fluid for the rodents through my excretion?

Good for you that you are training for your first marathon!! You definitely need all the strength through those vitamins! All the supplements your doctor prescribed are a good way for you to stay healthy, especially since you mentioned your gastric bypass surgery. This surgery takes out the portion of your stomach that absorbes/synthesizes these vitamins. However, I will say that before you add more supplements to your every day life, consult with your doctor. A lot of these vitamin companies are selling fake products, with a label that promised FDA approval (that’s fake too). By consulting with your doctor, they can guide you on what extra supplements you can’t take, or if you can get these vitamins through natural foods, without buying extra products.

Hi RaelynnRN,
I agree with U1192603410, I would consult with your doctor before taking the extra supplements. Honesty, as a dietitian, my advice is to not take the extra ones. I would stick with the ones you already take and eat a nutrient-rich, varied diet as best you can. Also, drink plenty of water to stay hydrated. Good luck training for the marathon! Way to go!
