Travel Tips Topic

Just got back from a work trip and slipped quite a bit. A little frustrated because I was doing so well with portion control, exercise and will power and set the intention at the start of the trip to “stay on the boat” so to speak. Have another trip coming and wanted to see if you all had any tips for travel? Long days kept me out of the hotel gyms (dang excuses) and lots of computer work.

Portable snacks! Protein bars, roasted edamame, etc. By the time you’re ready to eat dinner you won’t be starving after a whole day of work. I went to an event recently and managed to stay satiated throughout the entire weekend with tons of water and portable snacks. I had breakfast and dinner, of course, but in between I had no time for lunch. And if I skip lunch I will definitely want more food than I need later on. And that’s when the diet slips. Also know there is actual brain chemistry behind why you are hungry. If you skip a meal, you’re body is asking for more fuel but it’s easy to add too much or the wrong fuel. I had a Mighty Fine burger recently and loved it. The next night I went out and bought a doughnut, Almond Joy, and a loaf of banana nut bread. Why? Because of the dopamine. My pleasure center wanted more! I was mad at myself that I bought it. So it’s not all on you when you slip, by the way. Overall, my main recommendation, as someone who is on my own plan, is to plan plan plan. If you’ve got a plan, it’s much more effortless to stay on track. And preparation is key to confidence. And when you’re confident, things usually click.

Hello y’all I started losing weight with the app in March 2021. I am down to 257 from 303. I’ve seriously plateaued for about 3 weeks UGH! Any advice on how to jump start my metabolism? Unfortunately I have physical limitations.

Great job, Opa! That’s amazing. I can only speak from my own experience but I also plateaued. It didn’t last 3 weeks but all our bodies are different. What is your weight goal? As you increase your movement and activity, your body will acclimate to the change. Eventually, it will level set and then it’s ready to keep pushing. Since you mentioned physical limitations, my best suggestion is to get creative with your fitness routine. I have scoliosis, kyphosis, hyperextended ligaments, flat feet, I’ve dislocated both my knees multiple times, and tore a ligament in my right shoulder years ago. So I understand what it’s like to work around physical limitations. I found a trainer and he’s taught me how to get creative with at home exercise while staying comfortable and confident. I hope this helps!

Thanks for the tips Rob. Really dents the motivation when I fall off the wagon. I was feeling so great and confident then it just got stupid busy and priorities shifted. I’ll plan to bring my own survival snacks this time around.

Thanks for sharing these important points! I completely agree with your suggestions to plan ahead and carry highly-portable snacks. I follow both of these suggestions regularly as a Dietitian. "A goal without a plan is just a wish." Best, Joanna (MyNetDiary Dietitian)

Hi FancyLike,
I like to stay in healthy mode when I travel by doing things like taking the stairs in hotel (at least a few flights if a high-rise:), doing short Youtube videos in hotel, and walking in the airport or community. I am a yoga and pilates girl so will do one of my favorites first thing to get my day off in a healthy mindset. You can also do short videos at break or lunch to power boost your metabolism without getting real sweaty. Energizes the mind too so productivity increases;) Oh yes, plan ahead with healthy portioned snacks. Pre-portioned containers or baggies of nuts, dried fruit, meat sticks, protein bars are great to keep you energized and in a healthy mode. I usually stash extra small bags for travel so I don't eat out of the large bags. Oh, and water, water, water! Hope this helps for your next trip! Brenda (Dietitian MyNetDiary)

Great advice. Flying for the next one so less time on the road. I’m a YouTube fan for learning and didn’t even consider it for workout videos till you mentioned it. Thank you for that. Will surely make a better plan this time with goals for each day. Thanks everyone for these helpful tips.

Hie FancyLike- Glad you found the tips helpful! I will let Brenda know. Cheers to a healthy and active trip. Best, Joanna (MyNetDiary Dietitian)
