Updating Nutrition Facts & Serving Size Topic

I recently scanned the barcode of an item, and noticed that the nutrition facts on the label were different than what the app had. So I used the Update option to send photos of the new nutrition info. However, I got this response:

“Food serving type or size selected in search doesn’t match your photo. Search again or create a new food.”

I don’t think that this is a good reason to reject the update of the nutrition facts, and here’s why:

The app includes the following for the product:

Serving size: 113g
Calories: 80
Total carbs: 4g
Protein: 1g
Potassium: no entry

The latest product label has:

Serving size: 125g
Calories: 100
Total carbs: 6g
Protein: 2g
Potassium: 370mg

I’m assuming that the update was rejected due to the serving size changing from 113g to 125g, an 11% increase. But note that the other numbers increased beyond what you’d expect by just increasing the serving — the company changed other things as well (e.g., the ingredients). By not incorporating these new nutrition facts, the app is now inaccurate for this product:

Calories: increased by 25%
Total carbs: increased by 50%
Protein: increased by 100%
Potassium: missing in the app

You could argue that maybe the protein difference was just due to a rounding difference, and maybe even this was actually the reason that they increased the serving size slightly. However, a rounding difference wouldn’t explain the other increases — this is a different recipe with a bit different nutrition.

I’d recommend changing your procedures to allow serving size updates to products in addition to the other stats. Otherwise, your nutrition data is going to become less and less accurate. I’d rather not have to manually enter my own custom nutrition facts every time I see something like this.
