Hi Rmeisel- Yes you are correct! Right after surgery your calorie needs in fact increase as well as your protein needs. While it can be tempting to diet during this early recovery time when you can't be as active as normal, it is not suggested.
We actually created an article addressing this exact question. I think it will help you out. If other questions remain, let us know.
All the best in your healing. Joanna (Dietician)

I have a high homocysteine and the MTHFR mutation. What Should be my macro percentages? Thank you

Can I change the default calories to kilojoules in the program on all items....it is completely outdated to me to work in calories.

Is it nutritionally significant to combine rice with beans to achieve "complete" proteins? If it is important to include both, at what ratio, 1:1? Combine at the same meal? Within 24 hours?
Thanks for the help.

Follow up: surgery went fine, all better now. However, I was astonished to find that I gained 5 pounds (!) on the day of surgery, apparently from IV drips plus fluids consumed post-op. For any dieter who experiences a similar result, don't panic: it is just fluid and it does go away in a few days.

Hey- Yes you can change to KJ. Simply go to Settings and then the section titled App settings and you can make the change there. Best- MND staff

Hi Rmeisel- Hope your surgery went well! Are you following a plant based diet? It is one of the healthiest diets out there, if you eat lots of variety and plenty of veggies.
Combining beans and rice within the same day will be fine and you will still be able to meet your protein needs. The Amino Acids from each meal are available for "combining" long after you have finished the meal. The Vegetarian Resource Group (www.vrg.org) suggests the following: "We recommend eating a variety of unrefined grains, legumes, seeds, nuts, and vegetables throughout the day, so that if one food is low in a particular essential amino acid, another food will make up this deficit."
Hope this helps! Best, Joanna (MND Dietician)

Thank you for sharing about the fluid retention. That is very common.
Glad things went well! Joanna (MND Dietician)

my diet consists of Muesli, almond milk, non fat Siggi's yogurt, strawberries, blueberries and bananas. is this healthy?
Stephen

Hi Stephan, do you mean your breakfast meal is typically a combination of those foods? Those foods have a lot of nutritional benefit. If you have diabetes, I would be careful with portion control to stay within your carb goals for meals since they are all carb-containing foods.

But if you mean you eat only those foods, then I would definitely include variety of foods. For instance, add vegetables and other sources of protein too.

Best,
Kathy (MND Dietitan)
