When searching for something like a local food or something only in the app as contributed, what is the best way to enter it. I know you should always use the brand but sometimes that's not possible

Hi there
Am new to this and just starting to get my poor diet on track!! I'm a vegetarian and eat a lot of Quorn brand foods - but tend to sway towards cheese dish options for lunch/dinner - occasionally when my diets been particularly poor I experience heart palpitations and put this down to lack of iron - how could I ensure I'm getting enough or should I just include a supplement?

Hello U6049240,

Congratulations on intentionally making the decision to get your diet back on track! You are at the right place and My Net Diary can help you do this.

If you feel that you have lack iron and especially because you experience heart palpitations, I would first of all make an appointment with your doctor and have a blood test done to test your iron level (and tell him/her about your heart palpitations at the same time!).

You may also enjoy reading this article as well:

http://www.mynetdiary.com/are-you-getting-enough-iron-how-ironic-that-one.html

As it states in the last sentence of the article, "If you are concerned that you are not getting enough iron or that you might be iron deficient, then please talk with your doctor before starting an iron supplement."'

Good luck and update us after you see the doctor!

Regards,

Martha, MS, RD

Hi I've just started my diet and I have a few health problems like pros and under active thyroids I'm just wondered r there any tips to helping me lose weight I eat 1300 calories a day and go to gym

Hello U6051525,

Congratulations on starting to eat healthy by logging your food intake with MyNetDiary and going to the gym. Day by day!

Regarding your under active thyroid, if you are on thyroid medication, be sure to follow your doctor's recommendation for timely follow-ups as medication dosage might change over time.

Be consistent with your exercise. Even if you cannot go to the gym, try to walk or do some sort of activity for 20-30 minutes per day (if your doctor allows it).

You can do it!

Martha, MS, RD

Keep up the good start!

Entering foods - Hi U5991956, do the best that you can to select the closest food item that you actually ate, in the form that you ate it, and the amount that you ate. Local foods might be very close to foods that are already in the database - for instance, unprocessed fruits, veggies, meat/fish/poultry, grains, and oils. MyNetDiary includes the entire current USDA nutrient database so those generic unprocessed foods are in there if you know how to search for them.

To learn more about the tips & tricks for entering food items accurately, be sure to read 8/1/13 blog post at MyNetDiary blog: http://www.mynetdiary.com/tips-and-tricks-for-entering-and-correcting-foods-in-mynetdiary.html

Contributed food items are those entered by other members - and they are likely to have more errors. Go into Settings and choose to toggle off "Find Contributed" (food items).

Barcode scanning is an easy way to log brand foods so always try that first for the quickest food entry, even if you live outside of the U.S. If the barcode scan doesn't show it, then you can use PhotoFood Service to have most of the data entered for you by MyNetDiary- that way, everyone benefits from the item getting entered and checked for accuracy.
