Hi, my name is Brian Heldor I am a dietitian so ask me anything you need!


Well, I have set out to diet many times, but never make it past the first day. I end up caving in and eating things like cookies, pastries, etc. It was easier when I lived alone - I kept the bad food out of the house. But over the past 8 years, I've been married and have a 17-yr old, who has food for his breakfasts and lunches, including cookies, chips, babka (for his breakfast), frozen waffles, etc., and I just can't resist. I've loved sweets all my life, but would like to not have sweets at all, not only for dieting reasons, but for my health. Anyway, how can I lose weight? I need to lose 20 lbs. I would LOVE to follow Joel Fuhrman's way of eating, but my husband is stubbornly not interested. And I'm very uninspired to cook the food my husband likes. I actually end up not cooking, and then I snack and nibble, on unhealthy food. Help!

Hello Brian,
The entire day I can eat clean and I excersise a lot as well. But after diner I ebd up craving all the bad Things in the house. I am still living with my parents, and my mom buys a lot of candy and cookies. I really want to lose weight but if I don't stop with craving after dinner that is not gonna happen. Sorry for my bad English.

I am hypothyroid and take 187.5 my of levothryoid daily. I just started and weight 223 lb at 5'8". I'm wondering how the hypothyroid affects my basal rate?

Brian, that's nice of you to offer, but are you a new user? I ask because MND has 2 registered dietitians on staff. They are active and helpful here on the boards (and even had a dedicated thread to ask them questions), as well as being active by posting help, tips, and stories on the MND blog.

I cook my own foods, since I'm East Indian I make specialty foods like Chicken Breyani , lamb curry, rice with roasted potatoes , crispy fried onions, naan bread (roti) and they don't add up the calories or fat or sugars, how can I get the correct figures.
