Hi Team:
I thought the group called Corporate Survivor was perfect. Here is my short story. In 2002 I left corporate America to stay home with my children. In a little less than 1 year, I had loss about 30 pounds and was maintaining the weight with ease. On year 2 of being at home, the corporate gurus called me back and I went. Within 3 months my clothes began to get a little tighter. Here I am 2 years in and I have gained just about all the weight back. Dang those corporate meetings.
Anyway, I am back on track, eating right, working out, yadah, yadah.
But I am taking this thing one step further, I request food for the functions. Sometimes I am even order the food so no one can make any crazy requests.
Jasons Deli and Panera Bread are life savers. Both offer very healthy, flavorful options. Occasionally I'll get the cookie tray, but I only eat half a cookie. I watch everyone else devuor them.
What are your ways to beat the corporate food trap?

I find that packing my own healthy snacks to take on airplanes and into meetings really helps. I buy the ziploc snack size bags and pack almonds and walnuts as well as healthy bars like Kashi Trail Mix bars. They slip into my computer bag easily and I can snack on those while others snack on cookies and chips! And, the protein and fiber help fill me up and don't leave me feeling hungry.

I have a vendor I call "Donut Dave" (I don't think I have to explain why.) He was delivering a BOX of donuts several times a week along with my printing samples!! I finally emailed him a stock photo of a really obese woman in a bikini and told him it was me and that my husband was upset with the way I look in my bikini this year. He got the joke and ALSO started bringing fresh fruit. I know one can over-indulge on fruit, too, but so far, I think it is an improvement.

I rely on gum in the office. In order to get to the restroom at my workplace, you have to walk through the kitchen. 4 out of 5 days during the week, there are cookies, cakes, candy, chips, donuts, or some other temptations sitting on the counters with "Eat Me" signs. On days when I am feeling stressed or weak in will-power, I pop a stick of gum in my mouth on the way to the restroom - the strong minty flavor and smell of the gum decrease my cravings for whatever pitfall lies in my path. I also take a gum to staff meetings, so that if someone brought in a tempting 'treat' (inevitable!) I just pop a piece of gum in my mouth and it really helps...

Hello, Just joined. My biggest challenge is feast and famen. I get caught up in my work and racing against the clock that I go all day without eating and then I am starving and find myself eating too much of too many bad foods. I have to work on making it a priority to stop and eat throughout the day. This will allow my metabolism to work better too.

NorthernGirl: Are you able to schedule small snacks into your day? I wonder if it would help to make some recurring appointments on your computer calendar or phone (depending on which you'll actually hear/see) that remind you to have a snack throughout the day - for instance, at 10:30 and 2:30 have a protein + fiber/light carb snack (I like yogurt + a few pretzels in the morning and an apple or carrots with small amount of peanut butter in the afternoon, for instance). I rely on my calendar w/ alarms to remind me when to have lunch b/c I can get really caught up in my morning ... and if I skip lunch then I do the over-eating in the afternoon when I'm really hungry. I also try to make sure I have a healthy light snack to eat on my drive home from work so that I'm not ravenous when I walk through the door at home. At any rate, it takes many repetitions to form a new habit such as stopping through the day to have a snack, but once you get some practice and incorporate that into your routine for a month or so, I bet it will become easier. Good luck! :)

That is a good idea to set alarms throughout the day. I esecially like the idea of having a snack, maybe an apple, in the car on the drive home from work...I'll have to give it a try tomorrow!

Post back to report on whether that works for you - the alarms and apple on the way home!
