Hi I'm a 62yo Aussie on a WFPB diet Topic

Hi everyone, just joined up here with Premium and looking forward to seeing how MND and the community here can help my new weight loss and getting healthier journey.

I'm a 62yo Aussie from Melbourne, and have been on the weight loss journey before. Back in 2016 I was able to relatively easily lose 35 kg (78 pounds) with Keto. However like many, found it very hard to maintain and put just over half of it back on over the years since.

While I've had serious osteoarthritis in my knees for many years, it's recently got much worse, hence my need to lose weight again; looking at around 20 kg (45 pounds).

So I've been researching alternative diets, and came across Whole Foods Plant Based diets (a form of vegan), after hearing about Penn Jillette (from Penn & Teller) losing 100 pounds many years ago now and successfully coming off his high BP meds, and staying at his new weight and healthy state quite easily. He famously started with the infamous potato diet, eating nothing but potatoes for 2 weeks, then went on basically Fuhrman's WFPB diet as per his book Eat to Live. I'm more or less going to try and replicate his success, but will be using additional sources of info including Drs Michael Greger, Neal Barnard, Caldwell Esselstyn and John McDougall.

I am very keen to meet other MND members, and especially chat with anyone here who is on or who has done the WFPB diet. And hopefully some more Aussies come on board in this group.

Welcome-I am 62 and have bilateral knee arthritis. I am looking to loose about twenty pounds which is a moderate amount of weight for me since I am small. Probably the diet I follow if the mediterranean diet -I eat alot of fish with some chicken. My body likes carbs.

I am from the US.

On facebook, I have manage a group Fit with Knee Challenges. On MND, I have a group to support for people who have problems with night eating.

Hi Celia. Thanks for the welcome.

That is what I have as well, and have been suffering from that for a long time now. What has surprised most doctors is that I was not into sports when younger, as that is apparently a common cause of this condition. I previously worked in IT for several decades, so had a pretty passive and sedentary job.

I like a lot of foods, but my body has a problem with some carbs among others. As in, my OA knees and constant inflammation etc. I did look at the Mediterranean diet, as I do like fish and seafood. However I decided to try the WFPB diet to see if I could eliminate the inflammation, as many have had success doing. And if I can get off my CPAP machine as well it would be an added bonus!

I've only been going 13 days so far, but to date have lost 7kg or around 15 pounds. I realise that some of that is water loss, but having just come off a water fast of almost 4 days, I do feel great and can notice my knees in particular are feeling better already.

I'll certainly check out your Facebook group. And I certainly understand the difficulties with night eating, but my challenge is somewhat different. I work regular 12 hour night shifts (mostly 7pm to 7am), so you can imagine how my body clock is affected, regarding sleep and food cycles. Look forward to chatting again, and joining your FB group.

Great. i also have a sedentary job and was never very athletic so it struck me as a total surprise that I developed knee OA when I was 54. However, I have learned to like it that people might think that it comes from being somewhat adventurous.

However, I have heard women develop OA much earlier than men and it is not uncommon for women in their forties to develop knee OA.

Here is my facebook group for people who want to exercise with knee problems.
