What are your thoughts on probiotics. I’ve heard people on low carb diets can have issues with not enough bacteria?

Hello U1191219411-
Probiotics from food provide a host of health benefits. Many common probiotic-rich foods such as yogurt and kefir are also high in carbs. In addition, there is research that high meat, animal fat, and processed fat consumption negatively impacts the bacteria in your gut. Gut bacteria are totally dependent on what you eat. It is common to eat more fatty meats and animal fats when following a very low-carb diet such as KETO. Thus if you stop eating foods that populate healthy bacteria in your gut and instead eat foods that promote less healthy bacteria, the colonies in your gut will shift.

If you are following a low carbohydrate diet and want to include probiotics you might try adding these lower-carb options: Miso, kimchi, kombucha, and sauerkraut. One tablespoon of miso paste for example contains 4g of carbohydrate and packs a flavor punch. Carb content can vary, though 1 cup of kimchi can have as little as 4g of carbs in it. If your carb budget is more liberal you might try including these common probiotic-rich foods: yogurt, kefir, tempeh, natto, and buttermilk. Eating whole foods is healthier than taking a probiotic dietary supplement. Cheers to tracking! It is a powerful tool~ Joanna (MyNetDiary Dietitian)

I’m on a Bariatric diet which is a low to no carb diet and high protein. Since I had my bypass in June I’ve noticed that there are a lot of foods that I use to eat I can no longer eat because they get me sick. And some foods even get me nauseous by just the smell. It’s horrible. In the 7 months I have gone from 193-135 and I’m 5 feet tall. My goal is around 120. I do see a dietitian every 3 months and she said it’s completely normal but I need to try and get more calories in. I’m lucky on an average day to get 400-500 calories in a day. I do a high protein shake in the morning because I get very nauseous if I try to eat before 10:00 so I end up only eating twice a day.

Hi Melissa13067, I am sorry to hear you are struggling with your food intake. Can you contact your dietitian for ongoing support since she is most familiar with your situation? It is important that you get enough protein and nutrients to maintain your health. Are you able to eat small amounts of food more frequently or perhaps add another protein shake while your appetite is so poor? Here is an article on tracking after bariatric surgery that you may find helpful. https://www.mynetdiary.com/food-and-exercise-tracker.html Take care of yourself! Brenda (MyNetDiary Dietitian)

Stop with fad diets - Just do not eat factory foods! The nutrition is cooked out which makes you hungry all the time plus the chemicals are stored by the body in fat cells. Eat only real whole foods like real fruit, veggies, deli meats or non-chem meats, greek yogurt and organic or almond milk! Eat a little every 2.5 hours and drink 80 oz of water. You will never be hungry or thirsty and lose weight that stays off. After 4 weeks you will hate processed foods bc they taste like the chemicals they are! Study Dr Sears Wellness Institute to eat right, lose weight and be healthy naturally!

Instead of using flour, try grinding up nuts or oats to a fine flour constancy. I made a nice almond cake with only ground almonds, eggs and tad of sugar. There is lots of youtube recipes for no wheat flour recipes

My question is . . .
Why does a whole boiled egg have 62g of sodium and just the boiled egg white have 106g?

Hi there Suzib123-
The majority of sodium is found in the egg white. One large egg white contains 55 mg of sodium whereas 1 large whole egg contains 71 mg of sodium. For the most accurate nutrient information for whole foods check out the Staples food database. Just look for the folder and apple icon in the app. Have a great day! Joanna (MyNetDiary Dietitian)
