Low carb Topic

Thank you for the tip on Mission tortillas. I’ve been struggling with a solution to not having bread with every meal and I’m going to try this.

I use Joseph’s Oat bran wraps for sandwiches. Only 9 grams of Carbs.

Thank you for the great suggestions! Finding an alternative to bread is an ongoing process for sure. Here's a recent article with additional ideas. https://www.mynetdiary.com/low-carb-bread-alternatives.html

I am confused about whether to follow a low-carb diet or the one recommended by Mynetdiary with 45 percent carbs.
Also how can i reduce visceral fat from 27 per cent

Just started low carb 6 weeks ago. Starting to have some stomach issues. Any suggestions?

Hi there U1191219411- I am not aware of any reason why a low carb eating plan would induce stomach issues. Though everyone responds to different foods in different ways. When some people cut back on carbs they increase the total fat in their diet. Eating a high amount of fatty foods can cause a flare in acid reflux or irritable bowel. Perhaps you are eating more fat?
Sometimes when folks cut back on carbs they also inadvertently cut back on dietary fiber (found in whole grains and the skins and peels of veggies and fruits, as well as in beans). Eating too little fiber can lead to constipation, which can be uncomfortable. If your stomach issues persist I'd suggest seeing your doctor for further investigation. What are your thoughts on probiotics. I’ve heard people on low carb diets can have issues with not enough bacteria?

Hello U1191219411-
Probiotics from food provide a host of health benefits. Many common probiotic-rich foods such as yogurt and kefir are also high in carbs. In addition, there is research that high meat, animal fat, and processed fat consumption negatively impacts the bacteria in your gut. Gut bacteria are totally dependent on what you eat. It is common to eat more fatty meats and animal fats when following a very low-carb diet such as KETO. Thus if you stop eating foods that populate healthy bacteria in your gut and instead eat foods that promote less healthy bacteria, the colonies in your gut will shift.

If you are following a low carbohydrate diet and want to include probiotics you might try adding these lower-carb options: Miso, kimchi, kombucha, and sauerkraut. One tablespoon of miso paste for example contains 4g of carbohydrate and packs a flavor punch. Carb content can vary, though 1 cup of kimchi can have as little as 4g of carbs in it. If your carb budget is more liberal you might try including these common probiotic-rich foods: yogurt, kefir, tempeh, natto, and buttermilk. Eating whole foods is healthier than taking a probiotic dietary supplement. Cheers to tracking! It is a powerful tool~ Joanna (MyNetDiary Dietitian)

I’m on a Bariatric diet which is a low to no carb diet and high protein. Since I had my bypass in June I’ve noticed that there are a lot of foods that I use to eat I can no longer eat because they get me sick. And some foods even get me nauseous by just the smell. It’s horrible. In the 7 months I have gone from 193-135 and I’m 5 feet tall. My goal is around 120. I do see a dietitian every 3 months and she said it’s completely normal but I need to try and get more calories in. I’m lucky on an average day to get 400-500 calories in a day. I do a high protein shake in the morning because I get very nauseous if I try to eat before 10:00 so I end up only eating twice a day.

Hi Melissa13067, I am sorry to hear you are struggling with your food intake. Can you contact your dietitian for ongoing support since she is most familiar with your situation? It is important that you get enough protein and nutrients to maintain your health. Are you able to eat small amounts of food more frequently or perhaps add another protein shake while your appetite is so poor? Here is an article on tracking after bariatric surgery that you may find helpful. https://www.mynetdiary.com/food-and-exercise-tracker.html Take care of yourself! Brenda (MyNetDiary Dietitian)
