Low Carb Oatmeal Suggestions Topic

Hello all,

While googling the topic of Low Carb Oatmeal, I've run across lots of products. Has somebody used a brand of Low Carb Oatmeal that they like and can recommend? Currently I eat 1 cup of rolled oats that results in my blood sugar spiking. Any suggestions? Thank you.

Oatmeal by its very nature is a high carbohydrate food. From what I found “oat groats” are your most nutritious option.
You might also want to consider cutting back on the amount of oatmeal you have at breakfast & add some high protein foods in.
Good luck!

Are you wearing a CGM? If not, talk to your doctor about prescribing you one. I believe the most important thing is that your glucose levels out and rebounds quickly within and hour and a half and not exceeding a two hour spike. So knowing your numbers will enable you to know how certain foods give you a too high for too long spike.

Opt for Whole Foods over anything processed at all and try sautéing and essentially not using oils to cook or heavy butters. Use vegetable broth and consider more meatless meals.

As to breads limit them to maybe 3 times a week on one meal on each day. And look at the ingredients, go for Ezequiel or sourdough.

Almond milk over whole dairy milk. Swap foods and I bet you will see results. Look into WFPB and glucose.

Adding your favorite protein powder to your oats adds about 20 grams protein, chocolate powder and drizzle nut butter over! Hope this helps.

@ Suzib123, that is a great tip!

Thank you all for responding to my post.

CanadaAnne - thank you for the "oat groats" info. I'll try them and steel cut oats. I've already cut back on my oat meal consumption. Requiring me to cut back any further means that I can no longer eat them as a meal ... I would just stop eating them. I am twice the size of my wife so I need to eat enough food to supply my energy needs.

U128209 - Thank you for your comment. Yes I've been wearing a Dexcom CGM for a while now. That's how I can narrow down which foods I eat result in how much glucose change. I know my numbers pretty well, thanks to my Dexcom. That's why I am able to pinpoint the fact that Oatmeal currently causes a significant spike for me .... it didn't do so before.

Suzib123 - Your idea of adding 20 grams of protein powder to my 1 cup of oatmeal is an intriguing idea. I am assuming that by adding protein powder I can reduce the amount of oat meal I eat resulting in a further reduction of my glucose spike. My Dexcom and I will give this a try and I'll report back the results.

Thank you all.

The problem may be with the amount you're eating. One cup cooked or dry is a LOT of oatmeal. If using milk with the oatmeal it is also high naturally high in sugar and can cause spikes.

Have you tried one of the lower carb cold cereals like Catalina Crunch? The Cinnamon Toast flavor is available at most Costco's and I found the Fruity and the Dark Chocolate at my local grocer. The serving size is 36 grams, which is not a lot, but it's packed with 9 grams of fiber per serving. I use 2 ounces of a low carb vanilla FairLife protein shake (30g protein) in place of milk for my cereals.
