New with 40 lbs to lose Topic

Hi I just joined on 6/22/09 and have a little over 40 lbs to lose. I am middle aged and female which doesn't make it any easier but my job is fairly active so that's a plus. I hope to lose about a pound a week but my real goals that I'm focusing on are to go on
My treadmill 20 minutes per day and log my food and activities daily no matter how good or bad. I find I do better when I start with simple realistic goals. How about all of you?

Simple and realistic sounds like a good plan! I, too, am middle-aged and female. I started with about 70 pounds to lose and I've lost 30 so far. I began counting calories and exercising more at the end of January. I was spending about 45 minutes on the treadmill three times a week but a month or so ago we got a new puppy and I've been getting my exercise taking him for long walks. While I have continued to count calories, I find myself eating a LOT more than I should this past month or so. I'm going to recommit to eating less.

Thanks Rebecca...that was encouraging..sounds like you've already lost quite a bit of weight...almost 1/2 of what you want to lose!! Wish I could brag about that!! Ha, ha...Funny my daughter got a puppy as well (Her name is also Rebecca) and I find the walks are good for me but not as good as the treadmill as I stop and start too much...I've been eating way too much lately..my husband got laid off and it really threw me...I just started eating nervously from worry but we all know that doesn't solve anything and if I gain weight I find I work less at my job because I feel terrible...so here's to eating less!!!

I'll "weigh" in with you all (yuk, yuk). I am also middle aged and female. Is 53 middle aged? 50 is the new 40, etc. etc... I need to lose about 40 also and am trying this site to get a handle on my eating. I only joined three days ago. I have a treadmill, recumbent bike, weight machine AND a dog. No excuses except I don't exercise. I'm getting back on the bike this week so far... baby steps.

Hey Thebon,

think I saw you on the Health Cooks team!! yes please join us!! Sounds like you and I have about the same amount of weight to lose and I envy your log of exercise equipment!! I just have a treadmill but I love it...oh, and a small dog...good enough for me!! I am turning 48 in September so we are in the same boat..not as easy as it used to be but we can still get back in shape I'm sure of it...baby steps are good..they are encouraging..I find that when I try to overdo I always regress...so baby steps it is!!!

I have a particular mantra that I find inspiring: "I don't want to be old and fat. Old, I can't do anything about. But FAT is something I can change."

That's a good one, Rebecca!! And those extra pounds really make life difficult, don't they? I always try to think about how much better I felt when I weighed less rather than think about how I look to others..thank God I can still remember how I felt when I was young and slim!! (ha, ha..) Ah the energy I used to have!!! I envy that now...

I joined today! And I'm excited and scared. I've never tried really hard before to lose weight---I've just cut back or exercised more for a week or two and that's always been enough to get me back on track. Over the past year, though, I've realized that now it's not a matter of a few pounds. I have 25 I need to lose. I want my clothes to fit. I want to feel good about myself. And I really want to be successful at this plan. SO, hopefully joining will help me be accountable to myself! Here's to the first day!

Hi all! I just joined. I like all your posts. It's inspiration I need. I'm 53 and nearly double the size I was in my 20's. I like

Hate my laptop.... Picking up from above, I like Rebecca's mantra and I've just adopted it. Looking forward to following your ideas in the coming days and weeks.
