PCOS - Insulin Resistance Topic

hey there... I was diagnosed as a type 1 diabetic when I was 10, and I was just diagnosed with PCOS about a week ago... I'm 21 years old and in addition to my insulin-dependent diabetes, I appear to be insulin-resistant as well! I weigh about 150 now, which is more than I ever had in the past, and for the first time in my life I can't just eat healthy for a few days and lose the bloat... i'm scared! I don't want to think that there's a possibility that I'll only keep gaining or never be able to lose this excess weight, I feel miserable and hate the way I look in my clothes :\ ... how are you ladies treating your PCOS? any meds or breakthroughs?

Well first, you are very young so your body and metabolism will change as you age. Start developing a lifestyle of movement and excellent eating habits. Go for foods that are good for you -- low fat, low carb, low sodium, etc. Focus on feeling good about yourself and you will. Life is more than your weight, and you can enjoy it at any size. Just focus on staying healthy!

I was diagnosed with PCOS way back when it was still called Stein-Leventhal syndrome - 20 years ago! I have struggled with my weight the entire time - frustrating! I've found that for me to have successful weight loss I need to stick with low fat and low sugar eating. I also have high tryglycerides and this helps control them. I started taking Glucophage about 5 years ago to get rid of my dark/dry ugly elbows and it worked wonders - has helped me drop some weight and maintains my sugar well. It has several benefits for PCOS patients. Just thought I'd share this.

I also have diabetes was diagnosed October of 2009 my sugar then was 850. Today it is always under 130... I am on Glucophage also and it helped so much, they also put me on hydroclorothyadize and i dropped 45lbs in 2 months! Now I am having a hard time loosing more! I have had 3 kids and the weight just doesn't want to come off! I thought maybe if I come on this site and actually SEE that I am eating the wrong foods, that it will hit me! :) I also have PCOS!

I am on Birth Control for my PCOS and it has worked so great, my periods are regular and it is wonderful! :) Before I got on the pill I had a period that lasted 3 months! Now I get them regularly and I am so relieved!

I was recently, January 2010, diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. The doctor seemed fairly certain that I had pcos. She was my primary doctor, so I was not officially diagnosed. I was put on metformin and started ovulating again. I became pregnant in May 2010 with my 3rd child. It was an extremely difficult pregnancy because of the diabetes. Now, I have a beautiful 5 month old boy!! I have questions that I haven't asked. Does pcos cause diabetes? Does it make you gain weight? I am glad to see a group of people to talk to!!

I have diabetes and PCOS - and the meds all make me violently ill. I have tried birth control for the PCOS as well, but I had awful mood swings and couldn't function, so i dont take anything now.

I had PCOS and was gestational diabetic. The PCOS has resolved itself several years ago and inam now on a regular cycle. My PMS though is more noticable not sure if it was because of the PCOS or just something that comes with aging.

I have PCOS and pre-diabetes. The only way I have been able to lose weight was from a book called the insulin reinsurance diet. It's basically no more than 30 carbs per meal, and at least half the amount carbs in protein. So for example, if you ate 30 carbs for a meal you would need to have 15g of protein with the same meal. Calorie counting without balancing the amount of carbohydrates and proteins I eat has not worked. In fact, there have been times I stayed under my calorie goal and still gained.

Hey a great big hello to everyone here. I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes two days ago. Following in my fathers and grandmothers footsteps I guess. I don't know whether to be scared or just ticked off for not taking better care of myself. Weighing in at 350 with an A1C of 11. I am scheduled for weight reduction surgery in about 6 months which my doctors say will mostly reverse the problem but I have to control it for now.
