Question for the "women of a certain age" Topic

Hi everyone. Here is my question for all the "mature" women" What is up with the sizes of clothing today? I am starting to think it is similar to the dinner plate issue. I have never fit into such small sizes in my life, even when I was lighter(and younger). Have the smaller sizes gotten bigger like the plates over the years? Has anyone else seen this or am I unique? I am not complaining but it is odd. Have we just made small sizes bigger so we feel better? What do you think it means? Has this contributed to the BMI issue? I know raising kids we were worried about self image etc but how many girls did we know in the 70's that wore a size zero I knew some very tiny young woman back then but no zeros well at least not their size. Now there are size zeros and these girls look bigger to me.Have the clothes gotten bigger and the numbers smaller?I realize this is silly but just curious. As you can tell I went cloth shopping. I am now in a size 6 (at least todays size 6) which is so very odd to me.

Question 2 . I fess up I do no stuctured exercise program. That is something I am in fear of admitting here but I do do stairs (20 fights per day -at least) I have stayed the same weight since Christmas which has been my goal as I am now 16.5% fat which is low for my advanced age-Having a birthday this week-lol . My weight is stble but my cloth size is dropping. Why?

Well hope this has amused some of you . Hope some of you have seen the same thing ,please let me know, and for you young ones when you are a"certain age" you might be taking negative number clothes if this continues. Maybe it is a marketing tool. . Hope everyyone is well-Fran

\Oh the "woman of a certain age " was from this weight management person who liked to target that group-very pleasnt experience-not

Happy birthday Fran!!! All I can add is that when I graduated high school 52 years ago my waist was 31" and I wore a size 16. Now my waist is back to 31" (down from 43")and I wear a size 10-12!!! No doubt in my mind it is a marketing tool - the manufacturers are catering to the large number of overweight people in this country to make them "feel better". I have no memory of anything available in an adult size zero when I was a youngster. However when I was a teenager we were still considered "children" and wore clothes sized for growing kids. LOL.

Happy birthday Fran, the size numbers have definitely gotten smaller and I think it's a marketing ploy to make the expanding waist size in this country feel better. My husband and I go antiquing,I like looking at vintage clothing and believe me the sizes were a lot smaller then.

Happy birthday Fran. :D

It's my birthday this week as well (at least after European standards). On Sunday I will be 40 years old.

Happy Birthday!!! I hope you both have wonderful days!! And yes, it's amazing to me how the sizes have changed. I am wearing a size 8, but I pulled out an 8 from long ago that I still had, and it did NOT fit. Silly manufacturers!

Hi Fran

Happy Birthday (belated). I have the same feeling about the sizes. Still can't believe that I am in a size six and some of those are large on me! However, if your weight is remaining stable and your clothes size is going down, then you are probably just reaping the benefits of the exercise building muscle which takes less space but weighs more than the same quantity of fat. And yes, those stairs count! Some weeks that is all that I am able to do as well. However, my knees don't hurt on the stairs anymore, even though I am "of a certain age" as well.

Hi Fran,
HAPPY BELATED BIRTHDAY! I JUST LOGGED ONTO OUR TEAM NOW, otherwise, I would have posted earlier!
Yes - clothing sizes have been altered by many manufacturers. I think they have gone down by 1-2 sizes. What I consider a true Size 8 now seems to be a Size 4 or 6. It drives me nuts since I never know where to start when I try on clothes.
Best,
kathy

Happy Belated Birthday, Sune! You are still a youngin' (well, at least compared to me).
I turn 50 but not until November. My 40s were rough - the physical changes. But now I am feeling good again and ready for my 50s. I'm going to rock out on my 50th birthday party.
Best,
kathy

It's not late yet, there's still 4 more days, but thank you so much. They say it's a sharp corner, but I feel fine about it :D

Sounds like fun. Am I invited? ;)

Tomorrow is mine then I get to open the weight vest. Who would have thought I would ever want to add weight! At least when I take the vest off I will be the easiest way to take off weight=lol
