You can convert # of steps to miles and simply log that to get caloric value of your total # of steps per day. Hill et al. in "The Step Diet" has a chart of # steps to burn one calorie, but it is based upon gender, height, and weight. For intance, a 175 lb, 5'5" woman has to take 20 steps to burn 1 Calorie.

Welcome, MyNetDiary Newcomers! Please be sure to read my articles on meal planning, nutrition, and exercise. They are found on the main website: http://www.mynetdiary.com/diet-and-weight-loss-resources.html

Do you know that MyNetDiary has a blog? We have a wonderful writer on staff (Ryan) and I contribute to the blog as well. Here's the link: http://blog.mynetdiary.com/

It is especially important that you understand how to personalize your weight loss goals as well as nutrient goals. At the very least, read my article on customizing your caloric goals: http://www.mynetdiary.com/customizing-calorie-goals.html

Ultimately, you have to find out what works best for you by recording your food intake and physical activity on a regular basis and tweaking your goals as you go.

We all need inspiration, feedback, and sometimes, just a good listener (or reader in our case)! Take advantage of our Community Forum. When you want a focused support group or team, please consider looking through the existing groups and teams first and see if you want to join. Most groups are open but some are closed. If you want to create your own group, you can do that too and invite others to join you.

If you have questions for me, then please feel free to post me a question on "Ask a Dietitian." I also review the other public forum topics and post there too.

Sharing info with other MND members: Go to MND web version. Go to the forum post of the person you would like to friend. Click on their nickname on the upper left hand corner of the text box. You will land on their page. Scroll down their page, and then change the attitude toward this person from "neutral" to "friendly." Once you do this, you can set your data view options for them in your own Community Profile. The default is not to share data. You can change that option so that you share your data with all members, or share only with members who you are friendly with.
If you want to share info with me, then my nickname is "Dietitian." I think we all benefit from sharing info with each other so we can learn from each other.

I will periodically repost this same message so that new members can see it. Please forgive the repeats.

Consulting Dietitian with MyNetDiary

Hello, I'm Rachal wanted to introduce myself. I am a 38 year old mother of 3 who just left my husband 6 months ago got tired of hearing how fat I was and that if he wanted a fat wife he would have married a fat woman. I teach gymnastics and babysit as well as am a personal assistant for a local business owner. I just started Mynetdiary after my friend who happens to be my doctor suggested it. I have under active thyroiditis (hashimotos) that has be uncontrollable for about 18 years finally after taking a super high amount of levothyroxin (400mcg/day) and 12.5 mcg of cytomel everyother day my levels are finally in the normal range. It is now time for me to try to lose some weight. I am hoping to lose about 60 pounds and be back to my cute little self at some point in my life. I know it will be hard but I am determined to make it work this time. I have never tried to diet before I have just walked three miles daily for about 6 months and also tried cruves for a few months. I tend to get frustrated and quit if I don't see instant results. I am hoping with this tool I will stay with it and be able to see some results but if not maybe it will help me understand why. Thanks for listening Hope everyone has a wonderful day!

Rachalall, welcome to MND! Many of us want to see results quickly, but I urge you to be patient and create a plan for yourself that is healthful and sustainable.

You can read more about calories and how MND works by reading "Customizing your calorie goals:" http://www.mynetdiary.com/customizing-calorie-goals.html

As well, there are other articles on nutrition, food, and exercise on that webpage.

Avoid chronic undereating of calories (average intake below your BMR calories). You can see your BMR on the web in DETAILS or in MY PLAN in any of the apps.

Remember, weight loss is just the beginning. You want to develop healthy lifestyle habits that will help you maintain once you reach goal weight.

Best,

Kathy Isacks, MPS, RD

Welcome Rachalall,You took the first step to a healthier life by leaving a husband that verbally abuses you. That took a lot of courage.Making the decision to join MND and lose the weight was another important step, you CAN do this!
Good Luck

Hi all.. I am new to MYDIETNET AS OF TODAY. Went to the doctor and found I am at my most heavy weight 193lbs! I don't like the weight and I am determined to loose 40 lbs by April. I hope that is not unrealistic. I plan to watch what I eat including portion control and I intend to workout at least 3 days a week for 30 minutes or more! I am open to hearing any suggestions and positive success stories.. Good luck to everyone!
