Short Term vs. Long Term Goals Topic

I need to lose about 40 pounds. In the past, I've tried setting up MyNetDiary with my long term goal (i.e. 40 pounds) as my target weight, but I get discouraged long before I reach my goal, and I quit.
So, I've started again, but this time I plan to set short-term goals for myself (i.e. lose 5 pounds in six weeks) to see if I do any better.
Has anyone else tried this strategy, and did it work for you?

Sounds reasonable. I have made a commitment to log ALL food for 1 year. I am usually so up and down. It has been 10 weeks and I am still on track. I write in my notes section if I have a particular time that is difficult. The pattern is 3-5PM. I then tested eating varying amounts of calories and found that if I eat a mini-meal (300-400 calories) at that time I am NEVER hungry throughout the day and don't binge. I think I could do this forever! We'll see, especially since it is the holiday season.

I am just starting back - and this time I would like to keep short manageable goals- like use tracker for a month - or 4 days / week exercise for 1 month. Short goal could change every month.
I'm wondering if any one would like to buddy with me for a 1 mth challenge?

Congratulations on a successful 10 weeks, Jyan! And I can certainly relate to the holiday concern. I figure if I can reach my first short term goal through the holidays it will give me a confidence boost going into the new year. So far, I'm on track!!
My plan is to set a new short term goal each time I complete the present one. I'm planning to start with goals of 3 pounds every month in the new year. If I'm successful I should have my 40 pounds gone by the end of 2013!!

Jamuna, I'd be happy to buddy with you! I have about 2.2 pounds to go to meet my December goal.
