Vitamin D in Tinned Fish? Topic

Hi there
Is there a difference in Vitamin D levels between fresh fish and tinned? I am trying to source all vitamins and minerals through diet and aim to avoid supplementation altogether.
I regularly eat tinned tuna, sardines or mackerel for lunch. I have scanned several products but they don’t show any Vitamin D in the nutrient breakdown. Yet I read that it IS present in tinned fish.
Does the canning process affect Vitamin D?
This app has become so much more accurate over the years with tracking micronutrients- iron and calcium in particular- which i appreciate.
Many thanks!
Charlotte

Hi there Charlotte-

Thank you for the kind words regarding the database! Our team works really hard to keep it updated.

Both canned and fresh tuna, sardines, and mackerel all contain vitamin D. Sardines are the richest in vitamin D of these fish.

For the most complete data make sure to use the "Staples" feature. Just look for the folder and apple icon in the app. If there is a food you'd like added to Staples, please do not hesitate to reach out to our support team by emailing: support@mynetdiary.com.

The canning process does not degrade the vitamin D found in fish. This is good news for us Dietitians living in Colorado as we are landlocked. Hope this helps! Joanna (MyNetDiary Dietitian)

Thank you.
That has improved the Vitamin D and Omega 3 score. 😀
