What’s happening with my weight? Topic


I already made a post yesterday about me increasing calories. Pretty much, for the past 2.5 weeks, I ate under 400 calories a day. My calorie budget is 1200, and my weight maintenance calories is about 1900. I also exercised 5 days a week which burned 300 calories. This often put my calorie intake in the negatives, because I have a low active lifestyle. I lost about 11 lbs (I started off at a healthy weight, and losing 8 more would make me underweight) . In these past few days, I have been slightly increasing my calories and eating about 530 a day because 400 was just not enough. I have kept my same exercise pattern, along with drinking 80 fl oz a day and increasing my protein intake. I have gained 1.2 lbs. What’s happening and how do I stop it? Am I gaining muscle? Is it water weight? Do I need to go back down to 400? I want to lose weight, not gain weight.


Also all of the food I’ve been eating has at least a B+ rating on this app, so I don’t know how I’m gaining weight.


A percentage of your weight is the water you intake which can add an average 3-6 lbs. So one could assume based on the amount of water you drink and the level of sodium that’s in your water, you could cause temporary water retention, therefore adding more weight. I am not implying to drink water without electrolytes because that is a bad idea unless you are training for a particular reason.
Another point is that if the fat you lose sometimes is replaced by the muscle you gain at a neutral ratio than that can lead to temporary weight plateau.
I think the best measurement of your body fat profile would be by calipers (cheapest method) or a DEXA scan (one of the best methods). I get it! weight scales are most practical for nearly every home. Also add pictures (before/after) and just your empirical observation of your body weekly.
I strongly advise, intermittent fasting and weight training, not necessary for 1 rep max, but muscular endurance. The difference aesthetically when a male or female is solid is impressive. Also, please do HIIT training!!!!!! it is the KILLER of fat! Lol good luck!

Eating 400-600 calories a day is not enough to be healthy.

I understand you are fearful of weight gain, however, eating less than 1,200 calories a day makes it impossible to meet your macronutrient and micronutrient needs. Here at MyNetDiary we take weight loss and health very seriously. We'd hate for you to lose weight at the cost of your health.

I would suggest meeting with a professional counselor who's experienced working with individuals with disordered eating. They will be able to talk with you about body image and your desire to lose weight. I am concerned because you shared you started off at a healthy weight and want to lose additional weight.

Good morning, I am also perplexed that my weight has stalled or is increasind though my calories are under my limit. I am trying to lose weight ahead of surgery so my exercise is limited. Without exercise wouldn’t just the calorie reduction be enough?


In my experience when your weight loss stalls it’s because your body has a set point. That mostly will not be the weight you want to be at !! You just have to grit teeth & carry on eating within your budget to defy your set point. This can take some time in some people. Also, not eating to your calorie amount, your body will go into starvation mode because it feels you are not giving it enough food !! It will hang on to every crumb you eat to protect itself. I am sorry to hear the scale has stopped reflecting your efforts and energy! I realize this can be frustrating and cause doubt in the tracking process. I am happy to provide some tips though I need a bit more information:
1. What is your current BMI or body mass index?
2. How much weight are you trying to lose by your surgery? Was this goal set by your surgeon?
3. How long have you been tracking consistently with MyNetDiary?
4. Were you losing and then your weight loss suddenly stopped?
5. Have you lost weight in the past?
In response to your question... Yes it is possible to lose weight even if you are not able to engage in physical activity.

I’d always recommend measuring yourself too not all about scale results I know that after having battled with my weight for 30 Odd years!! Take you measurements arms waist thighs hips bust etc and see the reduction that way too :))
