Healthy Smoothies? Topic

Hey guys! So, there may or may not be someone out here who has already posted about this: ~ Mainly wondering what I can put in a smoothie/power shake for before/after/in between workouts. I make my own a lot of times but my main concern is sugar intake. I have to add A LOT of sugar to get the smoothie to taste as sweet as I want it to. Is there a way to have the same sweet taste, without sugar added? ~ Thanks for your input guys!

Hi "cajartina, have you tried experimenting with the proportion of fruit and protein? Many find that berries provide a nice flavor and 1 cup is only about 15 grams total carbs. Also, add crushed ice to help get the slushy texture without calories. Sugar-free protein powder is a good option. You might try Stevia to sweeten if you like it super sweet. Also, Yummly.com has lots of recipes and you can search/filter by carb content.

I generally don't drink smoothies unless they are a meal. As a snack, they can be quite high in calories and I would rather eat my macros vs. drink them.

Ah, no I haven't. I like mine very much thicker then normal. Stevia? Hmm okay. I rather drink mine as meals also, then having for snacks (not so big on "eating" regular meals) Thanks for the tips!

Cajartina, half a frozen banana with both sweeten and thicken your smoothie. Plus it isn’t a strong flavor so mixes well with other ingredients.

Healthier smoothies - here's a post on how to make smoothies compatible with diabetes and/or weight control: https://www.mynetdiary.com/tips-for-making-your-smoothie-more-weight-friendly.html

Leigh-annenew, I also use frozen bananas too for sweetener! 1/2 banana is equivalent to 1 carb choice or about 15 g total carbs. I also use ripe berries - the plain unsweetened frozen types, especially strawberries and raspberries work really well and gives the smoothie a nice color.
Best,
Kathy
