Sodium Topic

Hey all,

Just started using MND this week and I'm shocked as to how much sodium I've been in taking. Most comes from processed food as I never add salt to anything. I'm wondering if anyone has any suggestions, my wife and I both work and make dinners using packaged rice noodles potatoes due to time constraints. Any suggestions would be great.

Hello HarryRear,
What I've read so far is that if you are exercising as part of your weight loss journey, you need around 3500mg/day of sodium.

Hope this helps, I day a week my family prepares tv style dinners mostly from scratch. We pick a couple if different proteins, rice pasta, or potatoes and then 3 other vegetables. 4 oz of protein, 1/4 cup pasta, rice or potatoes, 1/2 cup of beans, then 1/4 cup of the other 2 veggies. We use snapware containers because they freeze then microwave well, dollar store containers work well also. This method can help you control your sodium intake, I don't add additional salt to anything, just what the recipes call for

Did you make any progress on sodium? I noticed the exact same thing when I first started tracking. I stopped buying anything with more than a couple hundred mg of sodium in a serving. I do most of my cooking on the weekends using low sodium ingredients and then eat the food the rest of the week--turkey chili, potato and vegetable side dishes, different types of bean dishes etc., similar to the tv dinner suggestion except I haven't been freezing much, I just eat it over the next few days. That's worked out well and I don't have to spend much time cooking after work. I take the things for lunch too. Creates some repetitive meals but I don't mind that. I got my sodium average down to around 1700 mg, I'm trying to get to 1500.

Olozada, I haven't seen recommended sodium numbers that high. I saw 500 mg minimum with max recommended of 2300 for most people and 1500 for those over 50 and some others. I did see that you need more if you are sweating out a lot of sodium but that the odds of not getting enough are low for most people.
