Craving sweets Topic

Face it you are an addict and will need to quit using all sugar.

There is a short but helpful slide show on sugar cravings with helpful tips & info: http://www.webmd.com/diet/ss/slideshow-sugar-addiction

Sugar is a simple carbohydrate and is found naturally in many carb-containing foods such as fruit and milk. You can choose fresh fruit and plain frozen fruit - 2-3 servings a day could help satisfy a sweet tooth in a much healthier way than eating sweets or drinking sweet beverages. For milk, plain milk is limited in naturally occurring sugar, but avoid flavored milks since they have a lot of added sugar. Same goes for yogurt. But at least for yogurt, we have sugar-free or light versions with a lot less sugar. Chobani100 or Dannon's Triple Zero are particularly low and use Stevia if you are concerned about artificial sweeteners. Plain yogurt is the lowest in sugar, but it might be a hard switch to make, even with fruit added, if you are used to super sweet foods. But you can experiment.

Added sugars in foods is a real problem since it is a huge source of excess calories. Not to mention terrible for blood glucose levels. The majority of added sugars in our diet (U.S.) comes from regular pop. But many many processed foods contain added sugars, not just sweets & candy. Hi im a newbie too and whenever I'm craving chocolate I eat a pot of alpro chocolate soya desserts and put some fruit in it like bananas or strawberries. I get my chocolate fix and also get a portion of fruit. It doesn't taste heavily like soya either which I know a lot of people dislike the flavour of.

Hi I am a newbe too. I often eat some dried apricots when I have a sweet tooth. But chocolate is irresistable. I can make it to take just 1 small piece of 92% cacao chocolate. I am from the Netherlands and I love Vivani 92%.

Nice list! Ty for sharing!

I have a major sweet tooth and I'm not worried about the calories as much as I am
About carbs! Which sweets have less carbs??

Hi Fabfe1, a serving of food/drink that contains between 11-20 g total carbs is considered 1 carb choice in diabetes meal planning. For a dessert, that would be a very reasonable limit if you wanted a sweet treat. The key is to portion control regular sweet foods to limit to 1 carb choice.

In terms of healthier sweet choices, my #1 pick would be fresh fruit, especially berries. 1 cup of berries, 1 cup cherries, or 1 cup of cut-up melon is only 1 carb choice.

Extra dark chocolate is much lower in total carbs than milk chocolate or white chocolate - but limit portion size to 1 oz or less given the high calories (if you are trying to lose weight or control carbs).

If I want something crunchy, I love Horizon Dairy's Whole Wheat Cinnamon Graham Crackers. I limit to 12 small crackers and it really does satisfy my cookie craving.

There are many desserts that are lower in carbs if you include noncaloric sweeteners (e.g. artificial sweeteners, Stevia, etc). It depends upon whether or not you use those type of sweeteners.

Here's a list of snacks from members that are popular - but they are sorted by total kcal not carbs. But the list could give you ideas: https://www.mynetdiary.com/snacks-galore-ideas-for-snacks-for-everyone.html

And this list is sorted by total carb count, but it includes savory and sweet foods: https://www.mynetdiary.com/diabetes-diary-carb-controlled-snacks.html
